I say over and over that I wish that companies wouldn’t include HFCS in products marketed to kids (Campbell’s isn’t listening and doesn’t seem to care).
I’m not a ketchup person, but my husband and kids are. What kid isn’t. So when I buy ketchup for the family, I have always chosen the organic alternative because it uses real sugar instead of HFCS.
So I was delighted a couple of months ago when I reached for ketchup and saw that Hunt’s removed HFCS from their consumer line.
I whipped out my iPhone in the middle of the ketchup aisle and snapped several photos because I was so excited to see a huge amount of shelf space devoted to HFCS-free ketchup. Yes, I get excited about HFCS-free products. That’s how I roll.
And guess what? They didn’t raise the price!
(Now let’s see them take it out of their commercial formulations…you know, the huge vats served at schools. I’m assuming they provide ketchup to schools and that it still contains HFCS. I have no proof one way or the other.)
Coincidentally, days after I purchased the HFCS-free Hunt’s ketchup (with my own money!) the company asked me what my secret was for making mealtime more peaceful.
Hunt’s is featuring the answers from some great and well-known bloggers on their Facebook Page (click on the Natural Ketchup tab). You can see my answer there right now. (I’m not great or well-known, but I know people who are.)
So you may be asking how the HFCS-free formulation tastes. Well I honestly don’t know because I don’t like ketchup. But my family has been eating various organic brands for years and not a word was said when I switched to Hunt’s this past time. I’ll put it in my cart again.

One option I’ve been using is to get enough Kosher-for-Passover ketchup to last the year. (Most Jews in the US will not use corn products over Passover — therefore, no corn syrup, high-fructose or otherwise, in our Passover ketchup.)
Unfortunately, I’ve still not found a brand and formulation that is both HFCS-free and low (or ultra-low) sodium at the same time…
