Duncan Hines Whole Grain Muffins: They had me at whole grain...

...but lost me at ---- (read below to find out what turned me off).

Browsing the grocery store aisles I saw boxes of whole grain muffin mixes on an end cap. Since I love muffins, but rarely have time to bake them from scratch, I thought I would give them a try.

I purchased a box of the Duncan Hines 100% Whole Grain Wild Maine Blueberry Muffin Mix. I took the opportunity to bake them on a cold, rainy weekday that I was unexpectedly home with the kids. (The babysitter has the plague.)

Of course the boxed mix was easy to prepare and required only two eggs, water, and oil.

What I noticed when looking at the ingredients, something I figured I should do before telling you about them, was the bane of my existence: high fructose corn syrup.

Really? You put high fructose corn syrup in a 100% whole grain product? Shame on you, Duncan Hines. The HFCS is the last ingredient on the list and is in the tin of blueberries. Why, I have no idea.

I don't generally purchase products with HFCS if I can help it. So I'll have to decide if the benefits outweigh the negatives.

Our verdict?

I liked them. They weren't as sweet as other blueberry muffin mixes (which is fine by me). My two-year-old ate two. He thinks every baked good is birthday cake, so he was impressed. My daughter doesn't normally care for blueberry muffins, was not impressed, and only ate half of one.

I will say that the photo of the baked muffins on their website shows way more blueberries than are actually in the finished product. Maybe they used two tins? And maybe they are enlarged to show detail? I've always thought that mixes were stingy on the blueberries.

Almost forgot...each muffin has 27 grams of carbs. In case you were interested.

(This post is part of my Foodie Friday series, brought to you on Fridays...sometimes.)

Disclosure: I purchased this product with my own stinking money. Aren't the FTC guidelines silly when I have to make sure you know that I forked out a few bucks for this product?

I wonder how long before they stop putting HFCS in everything? I'm hoping that in a few years it won't be the issue it is now.
Your disclosure statement cracked me up & made me spit Diet Dr. Pepper (purchased with my OWN money) on my screen. LOL!

Hey Mel! Thanks for commenting. I think we had that VERY conversation at General Mills. HFCS in everything.
