I normally plan trips well in advance. But unfortunately I am trying to get to Vermont this week for a funeral.
Things stacked against me:
1. It’s Thanksgiving.
2. It’s expensive to fly into Burlington.
3. Tons of people go to Vermont this time of year to ski.
4. The weather isn’t great up there (snow).
5. Not that many airlines fly in and out of BTV.
Has anyone had to book last minute flights? Any suggestions or tips? A particular travel site you use?
Not knowing the exact arrangements, I looked online for flights. Then I called the airline to see what the bereavement discount was. The price she quoted was twice what it was online! Thanks for nothing NWA. She said that it’s best to book travel 21 days in advance. I told her I would remember that next time a family member decides to get sick and die.
I would love to take the kids since my family is coming in from Rome, up from DC, and over from Maine. It is rare that they are all in one place at the same time. But the thought of taking 2 kids on planes that seat 3 in a row (yes, only tiny planes go Champaign to Detroit, Detroit to Burlington) makes me tense.
And last time I took a direct flight from Chicago to Burlington and back, we got stuck in an airport for 8 hours, had to pay $150 in parking, and got stuck in traffic for about an hour before our 2 hour drive home.
Sorry to complain, but I guess death is never convenient, is it?
Seriously. I don’t know what to do. So if you have suggestions, I would appreciate them.
