I want to get my daughter a bicycle for Easter. Easter because her birthday is near the end of the summer and that's just lame to wait.
If this was a birthday present, I don't think we would be questioning the cost of this purchase (as much).
So here's my dilemma:
Do I fork out a whopping $150 for a really nice Schwinn that my daughter can ride and then pass on to her brother? We would get a good five years of use out of it between the two kids. It would already be put together at the local bike store and would have a year of free maintenance. When the baby is done with it, we could sell it for $30-50 (hopefully).
Do I spend $50-80 on a bike from a big box store or toy store that we have to put together ourselves and that may not last through two kids? It's not such an obscene amount of money.

After school today, we stopped by a local bike shop to see what size she needs. She got on a couple of girly Schwinn's and couldn't ride too well. But when the guy pulled this one off the rack (it had really cool blue, green, and silver streamers and a water bottle), she said "Oooh!" She hopped on and sped across the store (I'm not sure what the difference was and why this one was easy for her to ride). It was almost as if that bike had been made for her. I'm actually surprised I got her off of it to leave the store.
I can tell you that I never had a bike this nice growing up. And my mother was shocked when I said how much it was (remind me never to talk to her about money). We don't (completely) spoil our children, so why am I having a hard time plunking down this chunk of change?
So please give your thoughts and also take the poll in the sidebar.
(There was another mother-daughter pair shopping with the same exact situation. They bought a girly one and said that when her baby brother was ready for it that they were going to swap the white tires for black and paint it. She didn't seem too hesitant on buying that $140 bike.)
