The Red Spot Goes Green

One of my favorite brands of green cleaning products, Seventh Generation, was only available at my local natural food stores (Strawberry Fields, Natural Gourmet, and Jerry’s IGA at Round Barn) and from the internet.

I received a mailer from Target this week and there was a picture of Seventh Generation products. I couldn’t believe it, and wanted to see it for myself before jumping for joy.

So on my weekly trip, I strolled down the cleaning products aisles and lo and behold, there they were, right alongside the less environmentally friendly cleaning products.

Two great things about having them at Target:
1. They were at least one dollar per bottle cheaper than my locally-owned stores (probably because Target buys in huge quantities).
2. Other people might be more apt to try them out if they see them on the shelf.

I may have mentioned that I found out that our cleaning lady refilled my Seventh Generation Glass & Surface Cleaner bottle with Windex. Found out by accident when I was cleaning a picture frame to insert a new picture (because god forbid I actually wash the windows). It came out blue. I was appalled to say the least. For some reason cleaning ladies across America don’t believe that environmentally friendly products work as well. (I know other people who can attest that their cleaning ladies hate natural products.)

I was so tempted to buy a bottle of Windex and secretly replace the liquid with my Seventh Generation!

But I digress.

I needed dish soap and reached for the Seventh Generation. It was lavender and mint scented. I opened the bottle to smell it and immediately my sinuses felt heavy. What I like about more natural products is that they tend to be less heavily perfumed. As someone with allergies and asthma, certain scents really get to me. So I put the Method cucumber dish soap in my cart instead. Maybe they'll start carrying the Free & Clear soon.

So next time you’re at Target reach for the Seventh Generation All Purpose Cleaner instead of 409 and their Glass and Surface Cleaner instead of Windex. I think you’ll be happy you did.
